This weekend was a first for Lake Havasu City.  Lucas Oil sponsored nationally televised drag boat racing on Lake Havasu.  The event featured 12 different race classes of boats that travelled up to 265 mph on a ¼ mile course.  There were 120 competitors from all over the country.  The event took place in Thompson Bay in front of the newly renovated Rotary Park.  Spectators loved the location and close up viewing of the race, dubbed “Thunder on the River”.  Starting with a street party Friday evening on McCulloch Blvd., the public was able to view the boats up close and personal and talk to owners, mechanics and racers.  Saturday the racing was blessed with Chamber of Commerce weather, with temps in the 70-80’s and nearly calm conditions.  Rotary Park was filled with spectators, shade covers, and vendors.  Plenty of food and drink vendors were on hand to provide refreshment and were hoping for a great turnout for this first time event.  Final racing day was Sunday.  The event will be featured on TV in 2-4 weeks.
